Leeds Area Fire Department Fire Chief’s Message September 2011

We have grown to depend on calling 911 for Emergency Services. With all the different ways you can communicate these days it is extremely important that when you call 911, the 911 system knows what address to send the needed services to. With Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), cell phones and keep old phone numbers when you move, it is now up to you to make sure that the 911 system knows when you call, where you live. On our website home page there is a link to help learn more. Reverse 911 is also available now in Washington County. We will be using Reverse 911 to notify you of any large scale emergencies in our area. There is a link on our homepage to sign up.

As we approach the fall and winter months it is a great time to clean the vegetation up around your property. Protect your home by providing that critical defensible space. The many fires in Texas with homes destroyed, reminds us how important it is to be responsible for our own property. If you want a free defensible space evaluation please call me. I have gained membership in a program called Ready, Set, Go (RSG). You can check it out at http://www.wildlandfirersg.org/. We will be using this program along with our Community Fire Plan for Public Education on preparing for Wildland Urban-Interface.

We are in need of volunteers to help us. Our department is as great as the people that support it. Come see how you can help.
